Svampguiden+ is the next generation of mushroom guide on the App Store and the successor to the popular Svampguiden Classic, which has been available since 2010.
Using your camera and advanced image recognition, the app suggests which species your find might be, on the spot and out in the woods. The suggestions are an aid that points you to the right descriptions – the final call is always yours. The AI model runs locally on your iPhone, so the feature works with no internet connection at all – ideal when you are far outside mobile coverage.

The whole app is localized in English: species descriptions, the mushroom key, the quiz and the glossary of mycological terms. The app follows your iPhone’s language automatically, and you can switch between English and Swedish at any time in iPhone Settings.
That makes the app a practical companion if you live in or visit Sweden and want to forage without first learning Swedish mushroom vocabulary.
200+ species with 1,200+ photos
The app describes 100 of the best edible mushrooms in detail, and covers more than 200 species in total, richly illustrated with over 1,200 photos and several instructional videos.
Every species also links to similar and easily confused species, so you can compare the look-alikes side by side. Educational videos featuring Michael Krikorev and Helena Björnström introduce selected species and show you how to recognize them.
All content – text, photos and video – was produced by mycologist Michael Krikorev, a trained biologist at the Swedish Species Information Centre (SLU Artdatabanken) in Uppsala. He has written several acclaimed mushroom books, leads mushroom courses and foraging excursions, and runs svampguiden.com, Sweden’s most visited mushroom website. Svampguiden+ is the official Svampguiden.com app.
That means the information you rely on out in the woods is written by a real expert – not generated by AI.
Mushroom key and filtering
Alongside the AI suggestions there is a step-by-step mushroom key that helps you work out which species you have found. Filter species by characteristics such as cap shape, color, size and habitat to narrow things down quickly.
The app also includes a glossary of mycological terms so the descriptions stay easy to follow.
Save your foraging spots on the map
With the built-in map you can save your best foraging spots with their GPS positions. Add photos and notes to each location so you can find your way back next season.

The app also supports dark mode for comfortable use in any lighting. If you used Svampguiden Classic, you can migrate all your saved locations and data to Svampguiden+.

How does the AI feature in Svampguiden+ work?
You take a photo of the mushroom with your camera and the app analyzes the image using advanced image recognition and artificial intelligence, then suggests which species it may be. The suggestions are guidance to be checked against the species descriptions in the app – it does not identify the mushroom for you, it helps you get there. The model runs directly on your iPhone, so no internet connection is required.
Does Svampguiden+ work on an older iPhone?
The current version requires iOS 15.6 or later. If you have downloaded Svampguiden+ before with the same Apple Account, the App Store can offer the last compatible version to an older device – it runs on iOS 12, though the AI feature requires iOS 15 or later. A new download requires iOS 15.6.
What does Svampguiden+ cost?
The app is free to download and includes basic functionality. A Premium subscription is available as an add-on and unlocks all species, the AI feature and every feature.
Which mushroom species does the app cover?
The app describes more than 200 species, 100 of which are the best edible mushrooms found in Sweden and the wider Nordic region. All species are illustrated with over 1,200 photos and several instructional videos, and every species links to similar and easily confused species. Can I use the app outside Sweden?
The species selection is based on Swedish and Nordic flora, so it is most accurate in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark. Many of the species also grow across Northern and Central Europe and in comparable parts of North America, which makes the app useful there too. There are over 10,000 mushrooms in the Nordic countries and no image library covers them all, so coverage is not exhaustive.
Can I migrate from Svampguiden Classic?
Yes. Svampguiden+ has built-in support for importing your saved locations and data from the older Svampguiden Classic app, so nothing is lost when you upgrade.
Can I save my foraging spots on a map?
Yes. The app includes a map where you can save your foraging spots with GPS positions, photos and notes. Locations sync via iCloud to all your devices, and you can import and export them in GPX format.
